About Safari in Tanzania
Tanzania is home to some of the most famous national parks and conservation areas, offering an incredible diversity of wildlife. The Serengeti National Park, for example, is known for the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move in search of fresh grazing lands.
During your safari, you can expect to see a wide array of animals, including the Big Five—lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinoceroses. In addition to these iconic species, Tanzania’s parks are also home to giraffes, cheetahs, hippos, and an astonishing variety of bird species.
February is a prime time to witness the calving season of the Great Wildebeest Migration in the southern Serengeti, particularly in the Ndutu area. Thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and other herbivores give birth to their young, which in turn attracts predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas.
Landscape in Tanzania
Tanzania’s landscapes are as varied as its wildlife. From the endless savannahs of the Serengeti to the lush, verdant floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, the country offers breathtaking vistas at every turn.
The Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, is particularly noteworthy for its stunning scenery and the dense concentration of animals within its confines. Expect to see everything from rolling hills and sweeping plains to ancient volcanic mountains.
Each area in Tanzania has its own unique ecosystem, supporting a specific mix of wildlife. The Serengeti’s vast plains are perfect for large herds of grazing animals and their predators, while the swampy areas of Tarangire National Park are ideal for elephants and birdlife.
The varied ecosystems ensure that every game drive offers something new, whether it’s a pride of lions resting in the shade, a herd of elephants moving across the plains, or a group of flamingos gathered around a soda lake.
Weather in Tanzania
February falls within the short dry season in the northern part of Tanzania, making it an excellent time for wildlife viewing, especially in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.
- Serengeti National Park: The weather during this time is generally warm with daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C (68°F to 82°F), and cooler nights.
- Ngorongoro Crater: The Crater remains lush and green, providing excellent opportunities for spotting the Big Five. February’s weather is similar to the Serengeti, with mild and pleasant temperatures, making it an ideal time to explore this unique ecosystem.
